Art Roles
October 14 , 2004 Community Breakfast Comments
What role could NMC play in helping you address these trends?
Economy |
- Incentives for volunteerism.
- Address sustainability, funding, relationships
- Performing arts need marketing and fundraising assistance.
- Support for grant searches.
- Marketing issues-availability of student, graphics department internships.
- Help facilitate the placement of more art in the community.
- Be involved in fostering the appreciation of fine arts in this town and region.
- Regional art centers.
- Venues to show local art to the public; satellite exhibit space.
|
Technology |
- Perhaps your website could become a real arts calendar-to help all artists and event planners.
- Increase awareness of art community on NMC website.
|
Demographic |
- How to reconceive arts in response to changes in attendance trends.
- Series for young people.
- Have the museum at the college do more to recognize and feature local artists and artisans to raise awareness in our community; reaching out to youth in the same areas.
|
Curriculum |
- Training artists in business practices.
- Staff training in non-profit marketing, sales, etc.
- Teach "art across the curriculum."
- Educating the public on art and trusting their own judgments on purchasing/living with art.
- Would like help in "training" arts personnel who are primarily conductors, artists, to learn administration, grant writing-to help with the all-around artists/administrator.
- NMC could sponsor a series for young children-folk music, folk dancing, story telling, using local talent.
- Train young people to have confidence in taste; buy a painting first, then work around it.
- Professional development opportunities for artists/instructors (business strategies for artists).
- Help to create a "community" of art that is currently lacking in TC-would encourage more participation in visual art programs at NMC; students would be able to connect to the visual artists in TC
- Connectivity regarding art education (regional art centers)
|
General |
- Develop a culture of volunteerism for organizations who rely on volunteer services.
- Data about region that is useful to organizations is needed (demographics, population, etc.); expand on what NWMCOG does.
- Need to place more public art.
- Remain true to core mission-learning/education.
- Push community to be "better than best."
- The Art Center has limited space for classes; we could use the NMC as "shared space" to hold additional art classes.
- There should be more partnering between NMC and local arts community to prepare students to fill positions needed in our community.
- Our focus is providing quality art education to the Grand Traverse community, expand the programs we are offering. We're limited to our space restrictions; NMC and its facilities may be able to offer satellite locations for some of our existing programs.
- Our second focus is promoting art and artists' trends of exhibition programming to younger audience to bring quality exhibitions to the area. Again NMC may be able to provide space facilities for exhibitions, lecture series, demonstrations.
- Downtown art gallery location.
- Needed joint shows: NMC student, faculty and local artists.

Convener
Role |
- NMC Leadership in (partner) developing/preserving volunteer culture to serve the Community Arts organizations.
- Convener role is valuable.
- Institutes are valuable.
- Lead efforts in entrepreneurship
- At the next NMC BBQ, expand beyond the college; showcase all of the possibilities of art, music, drama, dance in the area.
- Make the entire area aware of what is available.
- What is the connection between the health education institute and the arts?
- NMC sounding the call for arts in the area.
- NMC could play a leading role in fostering a strong art community in Traverse City (example: Crooked Tree Art Council)
- Pair developers with NMC to arrange fixed exhibition space for students and regional artists.
