Health Care Community Breakfast Comments, June 9, 2005

What role could NMC play in helping you address these trends?

Economy

  • Keep tuition affordable
  • Assist in recruitment of students for health fields: RNs, therapists
  • Market to adult students including over 60
  • Contain cost of quality nursing program
  • Attract small/large businesses so that younger people 18-50 will be able to stay and work in our area
  • Provide low cost, easy access paramedic programs
  • Continue momentum-seek out nursing health care workers, those interested in caring for aging population
  • Resurrect LPN program; cost effective!
  • Help to keep well-trained people in healthcare and try to attract very adept practitioners

Technology

  • Embed technology in all programs
  • Expand tech training
  • Collaborate with MHC to reduce redundancies in technology where applicable (ie: basic computer training, healthcare applications)
  • Offering courses/training in new equipment/technology
  • Offer training in latest technology in all venues
  • Offer day classes on new codes; building, fire, mechanical, etc.
  • Continue classes on computer and AV updates
  • Increase use of technology to reach out to students & other universities (video conferencing, on-line classes)
  • Focus more on retraining the adult worker; helping to provide new skill sets for displaced individuals/workers.
  • Look toward technology & transition more to a virtual campus (on-line)
  • Provide access to educational resources needed to stay abreast of technology
Curriculum
  • Train care providers in alternative care settings
  • Developing educational programs to meet needs of increasing geriatric population, such as: radiology, rehab, speech pathology, Surgical tech, DPT & PTA programs, Masters-Geriatric, RT, RT-Assistant-program/Adult learner, OT, PA, NP, Pharmacy, Billers/Coders, Cardiovascular tech, HHA.
  • Continue to support RN programs
  • Provide locally available advanced-degree programs for RNs
  • Ongoing continuing ed programs for nursing - from CENA, LPN, RN
  • Provide some of the healthcare education needs on site
  • Have the Culinary students do internships @ MMC cafeteria (just hoping!)
  • Provide programming to allow achievement of Ass. In Nursing degree in 2 years
  • Surgical program - scrub tech
  • Paramedic program with degree
  • Improve Management Education program with courses that focus on Healthcare
  • Medical Assistant program: 1-year certificate/ 2-year associates degree
  • More instructor requirements
  • Offer home health care courses, increase visibility in long term facilities
  • Focus on ergonomics
  • Continue courses focusing on computers
  • Expand clinical experiences for nurses 24/7 not just days/pm 2-3 days/week
  • Provide clinical programs to support needs of healthcare community (PT techs, respiratory, etc.)
  • Continue to support the medical field not only with Nursing but also technical trades (EKG, lab, stress, etc.)
  • Have programs maintained that allow for transition to next level of education
  • Continue strong nursing program
  • Establish a surgical tech training program separate from Baker College
  • Educate instructors for emergency response & prepare them to be flexible
  • Train for different levels of patient care required by levels of health care providers
  • Offer continuing education for management: latest trends in quality management, fiscal management, marketing, how to teach adults, changing management roles, developing resources.
  • Continue to produce quality nursing program
  • Training programs for persons serving people 60+: home aides, transportation, housing, RVs, RDs
  • Develop general "plant mechanic" program
  • Prepare for nurses to assume higher leadership roles sooner as proactive case managers in all healthcare settings (home, assisted living, acute care and especially long term care settings)
  • Standardize rules & regulations that affect how & what is taught at NMC
  • Increase availability of courses at NMC

General

  • Make programs affordable & flexible enough for the working person
  • Expand offerings for Medical Records/Coding/Billing program to be available & more user friendly for those who work but are trying to go to school for a better career
  • Reduce waiting list for entrance in nursing program and A&P class or revise system regarding admission
  • Offer evening and Saturday classes for adult learners retraining
  • Investigate expansion of 6 county support of college thru taxes (not just G.T. county)
  • Increase enrollment size of nursing program pre-requisites

Convener Role

  • Expand partnerships with health care facilities in outlying counties for clinical experiences and resource sharing
  • Leadership Role
  • Increase number of opportunities for advanced level educational seminars/conferences
  • Maintain ongoing communication with Healthcare
  • Keep community involvement
  • In partnership with healthcare providers (MMC, physicians, nurses), help educate community regarding new issues and challenges concerning healthcare
  • Help educate Lansing about the Medicaid shortfall and impact on the community
  • Market the school to community
  • Continue community outreach programs like the Community Breakfasts with the President
  • Continue educating teenagers to help them go through higher universities
  • Reach out to older "students" and educate them for evolving high tech jobs and entry-level healthcare jobs (clerical, business, Phlebotomy, Nurses Aide, Technical Aide).
  • Research and development of high tech jobs
  • Partner with Munson for education on maintaining health
  • Assist with grant writing, data collection, community planning
  • Collaborate with MHC in exploring options to address health literacy in the community and develop programs to improve outcomes
  • Need to determine what program/services are most needed and affordable and facilitate implementation
  • Continued community involvement to make TC a career destination to "keep younger people here"
  • Educate the aging population regarding their health insurance benefits and related issues
  • Joint education/training ventures with MHC for patient care providers

  • Stay the course with many of the quality programs you provide.
  • Strengthen partnerships in the business community. NMC needs to remain a strategic partner with Munson Healthcare & other area employers.
