What trends will affect the way you do business in 5 years?
Political |
- Change of leadership cohort in local community.

Economic |
- Change in base economics. 9-11 was a giant revenue loss.
- Local TV has to counteract damage by 24/7 cable and its sensationalism (e.g. the "cry wolf" syndrome
- Broadcasting will become more diverse to broaden revenues stream and to reach more audiences as fewer people read daily newspapers or watch newscasts.
- Difficulty in recruiting and retaining quality employees.
- The state economic growth and business growth.
- The issue for the newsrooms is attracting talent. We need people who can tell good stories; so does the community.
- Need to attract advertising managers with ability.
- People are being hired in newspaper positions with little or no experience because of lack of training in the area.
- Growth of region: more readers and more advertisers means more money.
- More hard news features; have to present good stories and business will follow.
- Need to attract readers with better graphics and visuals.

- Sprawl affects traffic, energy use, health, standard of living, environment, etc. Grand Traverse Area and TC need to think vertically. Schools and other institutions too!

- Aging readership and difficulty in attracting younger readers.
- Viewers are changing the way they want news sent to them and what they deem as news.
- More boomers retiring; more emphasis on leisure and health care.
- Rapid change in civic and area business leadership.
- 45-60 age group and early retiries are significantly increasing; looking for new career, perhaps in retail.
