Dennos Museum Center

www.dennosmuseum.org

The Dennos Museum Center at NMC offers programming in the visual and performing arts to the college community and to the citizens of northwestern Michigan.

Changing exhibitions are selected to provide a variety of experiences for our visitors with the added goal of offering thought-provoking encounters for students whose instructors elect to use the museum as part of their academic program.

The museum features NMC’s major collection of Inuit (Eskimo) art and a gallery devoted to interactive exhibitions for children.

The museum’s Milliken Auditorium hosts an array of lectures, theater, and musical performances in the classics, blues, and jazz. These events showcase some of the best talent in northwestern Michigan and from around the world. Student Government sponsored events and NMC music department programs are often presented at the Milliken Auditorium.

The Dennos Museum Center is owned and operated by Northwestern Michigan College. Operational revenues come from a variety of sources, including museum and auditorium admissions, memberships, museum store sales, building rental, endowment earnings, fund-raising and grants. NMC provides support for its use of the facility for college activities. In addition to a small paid staff, the museum has an active volunteer core who serve as receptionists and museum store personnel, give museum tours, prepare mailings, plan and host receptions, and usher at concerts.

The Dennos Museum Center is open to the public Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays, 1 to 5 p.m. An admission is charged, but NMC Students are admitted free with Student ID. Museum members are admitted free.

Rogers Observatory

The Joseph H. Rogers Observatory is named for the former science/math division director and instructor who organized the project which was developed with donations of cash, equipment, materials and services. The structure contains a classroom area, dome, and telescope; it was constructed to house astronomy classes and provide an educational program for community groups. The Grand Traverse Astronomical Society conducts regular programs at the Observatory.

The Observatory is part of Project ASTRO™, a science education program that links professional and amateur astronomers with teachers and youth group-leaders and their students in elementary and middle schools.
