Portfolio Review For Credit
An Option for Life-Long Learning Experience
Northwestern Michigan College may grant course credit
for students enrolled in academic coursework at NMC who feel they have
acquired knowledge equivalent to college credit through work, experience,
or prior knowledge. Portfolio Review is only used in special circumstances
which are determined by the instructor and the Registrar.
Procedures
- Students may inquire about Portfolio Review at the Registrar's office.
- The student will be required to contact an instructor within the
proper discipline who teaches the courses for which the student is
requesting credit. The instructor will determine if Portfolio Review
is applicable for this request.
- If the instructor is willing to review the student's experience,
the student will complete the Portfolio Review for Credit form from
the Registrar.
- The Registrar will receive the fees for the course and send the Portfolio
Review for Credit form to instructor.
- The instructor will review work and determine proficiency.
- The assessment should be completed during the semester the fees are
paid.
- After the review is complete, the instructor will provide a Q or
NQ for the course and return the form to the Registrar's office.
- All qualified grades (Q) will be recorded on the student's permanent
record as portfolio review credit. Students must complete at least
one NMC academic course before credits will be recorded.
- Portfolio Review credits do not count towards the required 24 NMC
credits for graduation.
- A student may request Portfolio Review only once per class.
Discipline Responsibilities
- Each discipline will determine if Life-long Learning opportunities
are available for individual courses. The lead/contact instructor will
determine with the Registrar whether competency assessment or portfolio
review will be used.
- Each instructor will determine the means to evaluate master of course
objectives.
- The discipline determines the minimum acceptable standard.
- Each discipline has the option of limiting the number of credits
which may be applied through Life-long Learning credits.
