About the Observatory

What...

The NMC Observatory is a fine example of this area's commitment to education.

Where...

Located on five acres south of Traverse City, the 1500 square foot building rests atop a natural hillside that was donated to the college.

How...

In 1976 after the acquisition of the college's telescope, Joe Rogers, then division director of the Science and Math Department at NMC, sought to build a permanent structure for this fine instrument. Started in 1977 and completed in 1981, the observatory was constructed without college funds or tax revenues. Materials, labor & money for the project came from over 40 businesses and nearly 125 people. On June 3, 1984, the observatory was named after Joseph H. Rogers for his efforts in this project. A complete history of the observatory is online.
