PDA's and GroupWise
You can set up a Personal Data Assistant (PDA) to work with GroupWise and keep your GroupWise calendar, task list, address book, and notes with you all the time. To do this you need two things:
- A handheld PDA
- A PDA cradle (recommended)
When You Get Your PDA
Please be sure to contact Steve Dix at 5-1305 or Beth Norconk at 5-1069 if Steve is on vacation to setup a coordinated time to install, test and receive a brief introduction to the palm software interface to GroupWise.
Buying Tips
To guarantee you the best functionality, support, and ease of use we have standardized the supported PDAs we use at NMC. The currently support model for new purchases is the PalmOne Tungsten E.
Remember that NMC doesn't pay sales tax, so get a purchase order or use a store where we maintain an open PO whenever possible.
Important Things You Should Know
The following items will help to protect you from loosing large amounts of work or important information.
- The primary purpose of the PDA is to sync Groupwise data.
- Functions that only sync with the PDA desktop software are not backed up and can not be recovered if lost. Do not use the Memo pad, picture and other PDA functions unless you can afford to loose all the data and recreate it by hand again.
- Third party software is not currently supported. If you download or purchase additional software be aware that tech support may not be available. Most third party software does NOT have a permanent backup method. This means that if you store information on the PDA and desktop and it contains years of data this data could be lost and never recovered!
- Be sure that if you create any additional address books that the book exists in Groupwise and the PDA. Failure to do so can cause the loss of data if something happens to the PDA. If you are unsure how to do this please call for support.
- Be aware of the data you are putting on your PDA. If your PDA is lost or stolen do you have important confidential information or student information? Do you have personal PIN numbers, credit card numbers? Do you store important passwords? Treat your PDA like your purse or wallet. If lost or stolen should you change and passwords or PIN back numbers?
