Law Enforcement
Associate in Applied Science Degree |
NMC Code 352 |
This program offers graduates both an Associate in Applied Science degree and the training necessary to take the state law enforcement officer examination upon graduation. Should the Law Enforcement student decide to transfer to a four-year college or university, some of the courses may be acceptable for transfer credit. Students who anticipate this option should see a counselor during their first semester at NMC.
Students may enroll in the Law Enforcement Preservice Police Academy in the second year of the program, or after completing the first year requirements. Students that have already earned a college degree may also enroll in the Police Academy. Completion of the Police Academy (LWE courses) must occur within two semesters. It must begin in the fall semester and be completed the following spring semester. A minimum grade of 2.0 must be achieved in each LWE course. This will satisfy prerequisites for certification and qualifies the student to take the state examination and be hired by a law enforcement agency within one year. Being hired by a law enforcement agency activates the certification. The Police Academy is approved by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES).
It is mandatory that all Law Enforcement students meet with the Law Enforcement Coordinator, Al Hart (231) 995-1283, a minimum of two weeks prior to beginning LWE courses to register with MCOLES. Also prior to starting the LWE courses, students must take and pass the MCOLES reading/writing and physical agility test. Online registration and information is available at www.MCOLES.org
