
Upward Bound
Upward Bound is a free, national college-preparatory program for prospective first-generation college students. It offers academic support to students during the school year and provides an intensive six-week summer residential program on the NMC campus. Students receive tutoring, study skills, cultural and personal enrichment opportunities and college tours. Students also maintain weekly contact with Upward Bound staff.
The program began at NMC in 1989 and now serves 60 high school students from the Traverse City and Suttons Bay school districts. It is funded through a grant from the U.S. Dept of Education, in partnership with NMC. The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians also provides support.
Who's Eligible?
Students whose parents did not earn or complete a four-year college degre, meet certain income criteria, and demonstrate the discipline needed for success in post-secondary education.
SERVICES OFFERED
- Academic Preparation - Help choosinge courses needed for college admission and tutorial support for college entrance exams.
- Support Services - Weekly after-school tutoring sessions, arranged college campus visits, counseling on choosing a college and completing college application and financial aid forms.
- On-Campus Living Experience - A six-week glimpse of college life, including residence hall life plus skill enrichment classes in math, English, science, foreign language, and literature.
