REVIEW AND APPROVAL OF AGENDA

DISCUSSION ITEMS:
Review of Capital Outlay Five-Year Plan - Trustees reviewed NMC's updated capital outlay five-year plan. President Tim Nelson noted that all Michigan Community Colleges and Universities are required by the state to submit a five-year capital outlay plan and identify only one priority project for which state funding is being requested. The state funds 50 percent of construction costs for community college facilities, but submitting a priority project at this time does not ensure funding. Because of the lengthy process, the earliest that NMC would receive any construction funds from this year's prioritization would be fiscal year 2010. Board members discussed implications of the ten items currently on the list, and will make a final determination of a priority project at the October 23 Board meeting.
Strategic Planning Update - Trustee Bill Myers updated the board on the first meeting of the Strategic Planning Committee that occurred last week. He said the committee has begun building a common framework for discussing the work of the committee, strategic/operational beliefs, and outreach to the college community. Committee Co-Chair Doug Domine noted that several informal, as well as formal, input opportunities are being planned around each of the committee's meetings.
MCCA Strategic Planning Update - President Tim Nelson reported on the Michigan Community College Association strategic planning session he attended on Friday and Saturday, September 29 and 30 at Gogebic Community College.
Advancing Michigan's Communities Forum - President Nelson invited available trustees to attend the up-coming MCCA "Advancing Michigan's Communities" conference on October 23, 2006, at Lake Michigan College. The purpose of the conference is to showcase best practice partnerships and collaborative efforts among community colleges, economic development agencies, chambers of commerce, government and education.
