Upward Bound

Upward Bound is a college-preparatory program that started at Northwestern Michigan College (NMC) on September 1, 1989. It serves 60 students enrolled in grades 9-12 from the Traverse City and Suttons Bay school districts. Students are eligible to participate in Upward Bound if they are first generation college students, meet certain income criteria, and demonstrate the discipline needed for success in post-secondary education.

This year-round program offers academic support to students during the school year and provides an intensive six-week residential program on the NMC campus. Students receive tutoring, study skills, cultural and personal enrichment opportunities, colleges tours, and maintain weekly contact with the Upward Bound staff.

The program, funded through a grant from the U.S. Dept of Education, in partnership with NMC, joins over 500 other programs nationally as it prepares students for college success.

Who's Eligible?

Any student whose parents did not earn or complete a four-year college degree. Students should also have a desire or interest in obtaining a post-secondary education as well.

What Does It Cost?

There is no financial cost associated with Upward Bound. However, students must be willing to commit a positive attitude, their time, their dedication, and their best effort!
