9th - 10th GRADE
MATH CHALLENGE

The Math Challenge is a math competition for 9th and 10th grade students. Students compete, as a team, in an individual event and several team events. A team consists of a coach and six students of which two must be girls, two must be boys, and two must be in 9th grade. Schools are separated into small, medium, and large (or small and large) so students from small schools do not have to compete against students from large schools.

The individual event, called the Written Quest, is a multiple choice test that covers topics from algebra, geometry, statistics, probability, and number theory. The top four scores are averaged for a team score.

There are three team events, the Team Theme, the Quiz Bowl, and the Pony Express.

The Team Theme is an event that combines creativity with problem solving. The students are given a multiple part problem to solve and present their solutions in the form of a story.

The Quiz Bowl is a problem solving, show your work event. Students are given from five to ten problems. Points are earned on work shown, not just answers. Having all of the answers correct, but no work shown, will not result in a perfect score.

The Pony Express is a relay. The students sit in a row and each student is given a problem. Only the first student's problem has a solution. The first student passes his solution to the next student who needs that solution to complete his problem. He then passes his solution back. The last student turns her answer in to the proctor. Points are awarded for correct answers only, and the less time it takes, the more points awarded.

The team's coach will spend the day proctoring another team.

This is an all day event, lunch and a snack are provided. Every student wins a door prize, and the top teams win trophies for their school and medals for each student.
