| The
Take (Canada, 2004, 87 min.) Directed by Avi Lewis and
written by Naomi Klein, will be screened at the Great
Lakes Bioneers Conference on October 15, 2005 in the Milliken
Auditorium on the campus of NMC.
Once the model of a successful Latin American economy, Argentina
suffered a spectacular financial crash in 2001. Its currency
collapsed, multinational corporations fled with much of the
loot, and many of the country's businesses were abandoned,
along with a majority of the relatively prosperous working-class
people. But rather than sit on their hands and complain, groups
of laid-off factory employees decided to take charge of their
destiny — and of the shuttered ceramics, textile, and
tractor plants in their cities.
The Take follows 30 factory workers who, despite resistance
from the Argentine government, attempt to restart their auto-parts
plant. Journalist-pundit Avi Lewis and author Naomi Klein
(No Logo) detail an extraordinary labor-based movement —
one that doesn't just say no to destructive global policies
but says yes to controlling their local economies. Inspiring,
dramatic, and wholly relevant, The Take is the Hoop Dreams
of progressive filmmaking.
