| This common lichen is found on smooth-barked trees. The thallus is thin, gray to brownish, and crustose. A dark hypothallus is sometimes seen (as in this photo). The distinguishing feature of this lichen is presence of the black, radially-branched apothecia that are immersed in the bark. There are eight, four-celled spores per ascus. |
