| Members of the genus Hypogymnia have a foliose thallus with narrow, hollow lobes. The lower surface is black, corticate and lacks rhizines. H. physodes forms rosettes on fence posts and the bark of trees. Mature lobe tips burst open to expose pale green, granular soredia. |
