| L. pulmonaria is a large, foliose lichen with tomentum on the lower surface. The thallus is bright green when wet and brownish when dry. The upper surface has pits and ridges and resembles lung tissue as its specific epithet and common name indicate. Apothecia are small and uncommon but, if present, are found along the margins. Isidioid soredia form along the ridges and margins of the thallus. Because of its resemblence to lung tissue, it was once thought to offer herbal remedies for disorders of the lungs. |
