Search for Journal Articles
To find
journal, magazine, newspaper articles on your topic:
You need to search for your
topic in a database or index which lists journal articles and what
they are about. |
- Use the Complete Resource List
to select a database to search. Read the descriptions to
see what subjects are included and what dates
are covered. You may also use the Subject
Category listing of databases.
- Choose a database that finds Full Text, Abstracts,
or Indexes of journal articles.
- Full Text: The whole article and citation information
will be displayed on the screen, either as a web page or
as a scanned image of the original printed page. May include
images, graphics, tables, charts, or maps.
- Abstracts: A summary of the article and citation
information will be displayed on the screen. Most abstracts
are one paragraph in length and provide a good idea of what
the article covers.
- Indexes: Provide only the citation information
for the article. The author's name, title of the article,
and journal information will be displayed.
- Search the database for your topic.
- Identify keywords for your topic.
Example: "What are the ethical issues
involved in physician assisted suicide?"
(keywords = ethics and physician-assisted suicide)
- Type the keywords into the database search box.
- Get a list of articles and the journals they are in.
Each record will indicate the title of the article, the author
of the article and the source (the title of the journal) with
the volume, date and page of the article.
- Retrieve the Full Text of the article.
- In a Full Text database, find the HTML Full Text
or PDF Full Text article. Read the article online, email,
print, or save the article.
- In an Abstract or Index database, use the
Osterlin
Library Journal Title List to determine if the Osterlin
Library has access to the Full Text of the article. Use the
print source or online database to retrieve the Full Text
article.
