BBQ Events and Menu

The NMC Barbecue's "picnic under the pines" is one of northern Michigan's most popular and enduring traditions and includes events, activities and displays for family members of all ages.

Event List

Here is a partial list of the events and items to be held during the 2014 NMC Barbecue, which will take place Sunday, May 18, between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.:

  • Picnic Lunch
    • Menu: Buffalo burger or hot dog, beans, potato salad, coleslaw, relishes, ice cream, & beverages – all generously donated by Oleson’s Food Stores.
    • Again this year: Compostable plates, cups and forks and composting of food waste. Volunteers will be on hand to help patrons properly dispose of used items. Help make the Barbecue a zero-waste event.
  • Opening Ceremony, 11 a.m.
    • Presentation of Colors; National Anthem; U.S. Coast Guard Flyover.
  • Activities & Games
    • Free Activities: Inflatable obstacle courses and more presented by the National Guard; Traverse City Fire Department antique fire engine rides; children's book readings; ride Chip (the faux buffalo) and wave to friends via live webcam.
    • Kid’s Games: Cake Walk, hair painting, Wheel of Fortune and more! Ticket purchase required.
  • Baby Care Station
    • Courtesy of Great Start Traverse Bay/Manistee.
  • Dennos Museum Center
    • Free admission to all galleries and $5 off the membership price. Current exhibitions include...
  • Live Entertainment Stage
    • Three stages with unique entertainment at each including: various local artists at the Scholars Hall stage; the NMC BBQ Jazz Festival taking place at the Milliken Auditorium; local choral groups at the Choral stage outside the Health and Science building.
  • Classroom and Program Displays
    • See the day-of program for details.
  • NMC Bookstore
    • Selling NMC logo wear and gifts, lower level of West Hall.
  • Quilt Raffle & Tent
    • Quilt on display: “Vines & Branches,” a Bargello Quilt, made by Bonnie King and quilted by Marty Beer. Proceeds from the annual raffle benefit NMC students through the George C. Comden Alumni Scholarship Fund. *
  • WNMC Live Broadcast
  • Del Corner Veterans’ Tent
    • A special seating area for veterans and their families to mingle.
    • NEW this year: Student Veterans Association dunk tank!
  • Greenhouse Plant Sale
    • Hosted by the Grand Traverse Mycological Society.
  • NMC Student Pottery Sale
    • Noon, Fine Arts Building.
