BBQ Events and Menu

The NMC Barbecue's "picnic under the pines" is one of northern Michigan's most popular and enduring traditions and includes events, activities and displays for family members of all ages.

2016 Event List

Here is a partial list of events held during the 61th Annual NMC Barbecue, Sunday, May 22:

  • Picnic Lunch
    • Menu: Buffalo burger or hot dog, beans, potato salad, coleslaw, relishes, ice cream, & beverages – all generously donated by Oleson’s Food Stores
    • Again this year: Compostable plates, cups and forks and composting of food waste. Volunteers help patrons properly dispose of used items. Help make the Barbecue a zero-waste event.
  • Opening Ceremony, 10:45 a.m.
    • Presentation of Colors by the U.S. Coast Guard
    • National Anthem sung by 2008 NMC graduate Tammy Sundelius
    • Serving lines open at 11 a.m. after opening ceremony
  • Activities & Games
    • Free Activities: Inflatable obstacle courses and more presented by the National Guard; Traverse City Fire Department antique fire engine rides; ride Chip (the faux buffalo) and wave to friends via the live webcam.
    • Children's Book Readings: Dr. Seuss story times at Noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.; special guest appearances by the National Cherry Queen at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.!
    • Kid’s Games: Hair Painting, Skee Roll, Frog Launcher, Wheel of Fortune and more! Ticket purchase required
    • Cake Walk: Including a cupcake walk for kids! On the half an hour from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. One lucky winner will receive a full size cake, while all other participants will receive a cupcake to take home. Ticket purchase required
    • NMC Martial Arts Clubs Demonstrations (Including Tae Kwon Do and Aikido, located behind the Kid’s Games): Demonstrations at 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 p.m.
    • Popcorn and Cotton Candy Tent: Ticket purchase required
  • Alumni tent
    • Scavenger hunt - Exclusively for former NMC students. Hunt highlights include a Hawk Owl photo booth, and participants are entered in a drawing to win a grand prize of dinner for two and a night's stay at an area resort.
    • Quilt Raffle - Benefit for NMC students through the George C. Comden Alumni Scholarship Fund
    • Kayak Raffle - to benefit the Barbra Griner Mikowski NMC Student Nurse Resource Fund
  • Baby Care Station
    • Courtesy of Great Start Collaborative/Traverse Bay
  • Biederman Building
    • Northwestern Michigan Orchid Society display in the atrium
  • Classroom and Program Displays: Health & Science Building
    • Science Classroom Displays: HS 111 and HS 117 (Noon–4 p.m.)
    • Chemistry Laboratory: HS 215 (Noon–3 p.m.)
    • Physics Laboratory: HS 211 (1–4 p.m.)
    • Grand Traverse Astronomical Society High School 114 & 116 (11 a.m.–4 p.m.), telescope outside north entrance (weather permitting)
  • Del Corner Veterans’ Tent
    • A special seating area for veterans and their families to mingle
  • Dennos Museum Center
    • Free admission to all galleries and $5 off the membership price.
    • Bonsai Society display in Sculpture Court by the Sakura Bonsai Society of Northern Michigan
  • NMC Barbecue Invitational Car Show: Vote for the People's Choice Award!
