BBQ Events and Menu

The NMC Barbecue's "picnic under the pines" is one of northern Michigan's most popular and enduring traditions and includes events, activities and displays for family members of all ages.

Event List

Here is a list of the events and items held during the 60th Annual NMC Barbecue, Sunday, May 17, 2015 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.:

  • Picnic Lunch
    • Menu: Buffalo burger or hot dog, beans, potato salad, coleslaw, relishes, ice cream, & beverages – all generously donated by Oleson’s Food Stores.
    • Again this year: Compostable plates, cups and forks and composting of food waste. Volunteers help patrons properly dispose of used items. Help make the Barbecue a zero-waste event.
  • Opening Ceremony, 10:45 a.m.
    • Presentation of Colors by the U.S Coast Guard; National Anthem by Madison Hertel, Traverse City West HS Freshman.
    • Serving lines open after opening ceremony at 11 a.m.
  • Activities & Games
    • Free Activities: Inflatable obstacle courses and more presented by the National Guard; Traverse City Fire Department antique fire engine rides; ride Chip (the faux buffalo) and wave to friends via live webcam.
    • Children's Book Readings: "Acoustic Rooster and His Barnyard Band" by Kwame Alexander and illustrated by Tim Bowers. 1–3 p.m. with a special reading by the National Cherry Queen at 2 p.m.
    • Kid’s Games: Hair Painting, Skee Roll, Frog Launcher, Wheel of Fortune and more! Ticket purchase required.
    • Cake Walk: New this year: Cupcake walk for kids! On the half an hour from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. One lucky winner will receive a full size cake, while all other participants will receive a cupcake to take home. Ticket purchase required.
    • Popcorn and Cotton Candy Tent: Ticket purchase required.
  • Baby Care Station
    • Courtesy of Great Start Collaborative/Traverse Bay.
  • Dennos Museum Center
    • Free admission to all galleries and $5 off the membership price. Current exhibitions include Not Ready to Make Nice: Guerrilla Girls in the Art World and Beyond; Michigan League of Handweavers; and By Air-Land-Sea: Storis.
    • Bonsai Society display in Sculpture Court.
  • Live Entertainment 
    • Hip Hop Dance and Jazz Bands at the Milliken Auditorium;
  • Classroom and Program Displays

  • 61st Annual NMC Barbecue Car Show: Vote for the People's Choice Award!
  • NMC Bookstore
    • Selling NMC logo wear and gifts, lower level of West Hall. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • WNMC Live Broadcast
  • Del Corner Veterans’ Tent
    • A special seating area for veterans and their families to mingle.
  • Greenhouse Plant Sale
    • Hosted by the Great Lakes Freshwater Society student group.
  • Alumni tent
    • Scavenger hunt - Exclusively for former NMC students. Hunt highlights include a Hawk Owl photo booth, and participants are entered in a drawing to win a grand prize of dinner for two and a night's stay at an area resort.
    • Quilt Raffle - to benefit NMC students through the George C. Comden Alumni Scholarship Fund. 
    • Kayak Raffle - to benefit he Barbra Griner Mikowski NMC Student Nurse Resource Fund
