NMC and TCAPS Explore Opportunities to Share Technology Resources

Effort seeks to improve efficiency, meet the technology needs of students

TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) and Northwestern Michigan College (NMC) announce an effort to explore opportunities to share technology resources.

“We are always looking for ways to be more efficient, while effectively delivering the best services to our students,” said Steve Cousins, superintendent of Traverse City Area Public Schools. “By partnering with NMC, our goal is to continue to provide important technology in the classroom today, while preparing students for the future.”

NMC and TCAPS are two of the major education providers in the region and TCAPS students make up the largest group of local enrollees at NMC after graduation.

“As two of the largest education providers in the region, and as two publicly assisted organizations, it’s incumbent upon us to ask if there are ways we can expand our collaboration in ways that benefit our learners, community and taxpayers.” said Timothy J. Nelson, president of Northwestern Michigan College. “Recent staff changes at NMC have created the opportunity for us to re-examine ways we might be able to collaborate in the area of technology.”

The first task will be an evaluation of NMC’s technology capacities by TCAPS Director of Educational and Administrative Technology, Todd Neibauer. The goal of the evaluation is to determine areas that could result in reducing costs for both institutions, for example by sharing physical resources, like data centers and network infrastructure, or by using higher volume purchasing to create cost savings. The evaluation will also look for opportunities to ease the transition for student learners from TCAPS to NMC, for example by using consistent technology, so that a student learns how to use technology in high school that they will need to be successful in college.

Neibauer will remain an employee of TCAPS and NMC will be billed for a portion of his time. During this period, NMC will not fill the current NMC Executive Director position being vacated and will reallocate internal resources to ensure that the ongoing technology needs of the college continue to be met.

The technology collaboration effort is part of a larger initiative between TCAPS and NMC to share resources, align curriculums, and reduce duplication, where possible, to provide the best, most efficient educational opportunities to students, the community and area taxpayers.
