Marching into spring

TRAVERSE CITY — Ready for spring? Plan to attend the NMC Concert Band’s Feb. 28 concert, “Marching into Spring,” in Milliken Auditorium.

Being realists from northern Michigan, however, director Pat Brumbaugh and the band know that gray skies and snow won’t retreat for awhile. So they decided to offer the community a treat, and made the concert free.

“Since it’s been such a long, hard winter, we wanted to encourage people to get out of the house and come to a concert,” Brumbaugh said. “We’re trying to expose more people to the band, and get them excited about coming and hearing the band more often, and maybe even being part of it.”

The music selections include: Amparito Roca March, Legends & Heroes, Children's March, Third Suite, Washington Grays, Cajun Folk Songs, March of the Belgian Parachutists, and the Wind and The Lion. The performance begins at 8 p.m.

The NMC Concert Band was formed in 1973 and now totals more than 50 members. It is comprised of young, energetic college students learning side-by-side with experienced adults. The band is a member of the Association of Concert Bands. Rehearsals are weekly throughout the academic year.

Brumbaugh added that new members are welcome. No audition is necessary. The only requirement is previously experience playing an instrument.

Release date: February 11, 2014
