Building Tomorrow construction career and college readiness event April 21-23

TRAVERSE CITY — Registration is now open for Building Tomorrow, a construction career and college readiness event designed to introduce high school students to the bright future of construction industry careers set for April 21-23 at NMC's Aero Park Laboratories building.

Students from around the five-county region will learn what it’s like to be a project manager, a master electrician, an engineer and more — direct from the people who do these jobs every day. Students will have the opportunity to touch, feel, and work with actual construction workplace equipment tools and technology.

NMC offers both certificate and degree programs in construction technology and related fields. The U.S. Bureau of Labor projects a shortage of 1.6 million skilled workers by 2022. A state study found that demand for skilled workers in northern Michigan has risen 46 percent since 2013.

“Every year we train over 300 students in technical jobs and we still can’t keep up with the demand for a skilled workforce, we have more employer requests for internships and full-time positions than students” said Ed Bailey, NMC’s Director of Technical Programs. “We are excited to offer this opportunity for young people in our community to explore potential career pathways.”

High schools in Antrim, Kalkaska, Grand Traverse, Benzie, and Leelanau counties are encouraged to register for the student-only days on Thursday, April 21 and Friday, April 22 by April 1. Building Tomorrow will be open to the public on Saturday, April 23. Visit nmc.edu/building-tomorrow for additional details, to participate as an employer, or to register a school.
