New families may find the following documents helpful in answering questions about the choir:
The NMC Children’s Choir is a program of exemplary choral music performance that develops high levels of artistic, expressive singing for students in Kindergarten through grade nine in the Greater Grand Traverse Area. The Children’s Choir exists to artistically enrich the lives of the children, their families, and the community.
The NMC Children’s Choir organization consists of six ensembles. Students are placed in an ensemble based on age and experience level. Our goal is for every child in the NMCCC to be successful in their experience with us. NMCCC Choirs are open to students in Kindergarten through grade nine. Prelude is an introductory opportunity for our youngest (K-1st) singers. Dolce, a beginning choir for second and third graders, is a non-audition group. Auditions for the other choirs — Bel Canto, Lyric, Ragazzo, and Cantus — are held in the Spring and Fall. Choir members perform in three to four concerts during the season. Lyric, Ragazzo, and Cantus choir members also participate in a spring tour of area elementary schools. Tuition for the choir season, which runs from September to April, ranges from $89 to $319. Some financial assistance is available. More information concerning auditions, enrollment and financial aid is available from NMC's Extended Educational Services, (231) 995-1700.
Rehearsals are held in the Fine Arts Building and the Oleson Center on NMC's main campus (#11 and #15 on the main campus map). All six choirs rehearse on Tuesday evening. There are occasional Saturday rehearsals immediately preceding a concert for Dolce and Bel Cantos Choirs. The Lyric, Ragazzo, and Cantus Choirs rehearse more frequently and have a number of Saturday in addition to the regularly scheduled Tuesday rehearsals. Rehearsals focus on appropriate singing skills, music reading skills, interpretive skills and musical literacy. Rehearsals are carefully structured to make maximum use of the allocated time. Students are always encouraged to sing beautifully, artistically, expressively.
