“In 2002 I graduated from Kalkaska High School and started the two-year Visual Communications program at NMC. I really love how small the classes were at NMC, and how personal the interaction was with the students and instructors. Coming from a small town I really appreciated that fact. I knew all of my instructors on a first-name basis and they were able to recognize my personal style and abilities. Because all my art classes were in one building I was able to speak with any of my instructors whenever I had a question or an issue I needed to work through.”

This degree program is oriented to careers in advertising design and graphic design. Employment opportunities include entry-level positions in newspapers, publishing and printing firms, retail firms, manufacturers, advertising agencies and local freelance work. Students are encouraged to transfer to four-year colleges or universities to earn a bachelor’s degree if they plan to seek higher level positions. Emphasis is placed on learning marketable job skills, process, problem-solving techniques, and portfolio preparation. Students explore a full range of skills: drawing, lettering, layout, computer illustration techniques, teamwork, new media and design.
