Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) cameras are far more complex than ordinary point and shoot cameras. You know you have a DSLR camera if it has interchangeable lenses. Learn how to take better photos as well as identify and adjust the most commonly used functions of your DSLR camera. Gain an understanding of exposure basics and clarify many of your camera’s settings such as exposure modes, the histogram, and much more. Bring your digital camera with a fully charged battery, a memory card, your user manual, and your questions. Not suitable for point and shoot cameras.

EEAC 755 -- Canticum Novum -- Sep. 24 to Jul. 1

The NMC Canticum Novum (kahn’-tee-koom noh’-voom), meaning “new song,” is a new choral offering at NMC. Because of the challenging literature and the abbreviated rehearsal schedule, only singers with good reading skills should inquire. Canticum Novum has several performance cycles throughout the year, with an emphasis on performances in the fall and late spring. Fine tune your glass cutting techniques and use an array of glass materials to create your own unique kiln-formed pair of colorful wasabi bowls and a sushi platter! Use a variety of colored frits (crushed glass), confetti (glass shards) and stringers (glass strings) to create exciting effects. Your glass pieces will be melted (fused) and formed into a shape. Are you curious about hand weaving, but not ready to invest in a large loom? Rigid heddle looms are portable, less expensive, and easy to use. Learn the simplest method of warping your loom. Once set up, you’ll learn how to make plain weave, the most basic and versatile weave structure. Become familiar with weaving vocabulary, how to finish your project, and how to make design decisions for your next project. A supply list will be mailed prior to the first class. A good tapestry begins with a good foundation! Learn the building blocks of tapestry weaving starting with a good warp. Learn various methods of creating shapes and how to join them together by practicing slits, joins, diagonals and vertical curves. By the end, you’ll understand the foundational skills of tapestry-making including how to design for tapestry and how to finish and display your completed piece of art. In this class, you will pull names, addresses, and other information from the Excel database into documents, labels, envelopes, or emails using Word’s Mail Merge feature. Mail Merge lets you send personalized messages to multiple contacts without retyping. Each message has the same content, but some parts can be customized. This saves time and reduces the likelihood of errors that occur when retyping data. Topics include: determining content to personalize, creating a form letter with customized fields, the four steps to merging data, and selecting and filtering records in the merge.

Ghost towns captivate our imaginations. Who were the people and what were their lives like? Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is home to several ghost towns. Glen Haven is an example of what these logging villages were like in their heyday. Discover the towns, what happened to them, and the people who lived there. The park adventure begins at the National Lakeshore Visitor Center. Van transportation is provided from the University Center to Empire and throughout the park (you may prefer to meet the group at the Visitor Center at 9 a.m.), then back to the University Center at 5 p.m. We’ll travel to several ghost towns exploring areas of the park very few people find. Water quality is essential to the quality of life in our area. Find out what factors influence water quality in our region in this hands-on course. Join the staff of the Grass River Natural area as you work through the tools and techniques used to measure water quality of our local streams and rivers. You’ll run chemical and physical field tests and evaluate your results to determine the levels of oxygen, turbidity, pH, temperature, and nutrients. Learn how the quantity and quality of aquatic life equates to the health of a stream or body of water. This course qualifies for credit toward the Northern Naturalist certificate. Learn to identify Yellow Feet, Black Trumpets, Turkey Tail, and Charga along with 15 other genera. Treat yourself to a holistic yoga experience. Bikram Yoga is an excellent workout and, in only 90 minutes, it detoxifies the body. It also helps still the mind by emphasizing meditation, and the importance of being present in your life. The original Hot Yoga, 105 degrees, 26 poses and two breathing exercises. This class meets for 90 minutes, three times per week for 7.5 weeks on a flexible schedule. There are 26 class meeting times throughout the week, all with supportive, passionate and professionally trained yoga teachers. Classes are offered during the daytime, evening, and weekends.
