ASES National Solar Tour comes to Traverse City

American Solar Energy Society logoTRAVERSE CITY — The American Solar Energy Society's National Solar Tour, the largest grassroots solar event in the nation, is coming to Traverse City this October. Organized by The Groundwork Center for Resilient Communities, NMC Extended Education and the Great Lakes Renewable Energy Association, the Traverse City tour takes place Saturday, Oct. 3 starting at 10 a.m.

Groundwork Center logoThe tour offers the opportunity to informally visit innovative green homes and buildings, and see how solar energy can be used efficiently. Tour organizers hope to inspire people across the nation to make sustainable energy choices that reduce costs, support energy independence, protect against power outages, and reduce carbon emissions.

Great Lakes Renewable Energy Association logoThe ASES National Solar Tour involves about 150,000 participants and 5,000 solar energy sites nationwide. This is a chance to see affordable and practical technologies in your neighborhood that benefit the environment and are part of the solution to our nation’s energy problems. If you are considering solar energy, please consider visiting a business or resident taking part in the National Solar Tour to learn more.

The tour will start at 10 a.m. at NMC's Aero Park Campus.

  • Address: 2525 Aero Park Drive, Traverse City, MI

The 10 a.m. kickoff at NMC will include a short presentation about what to look for on the tour and information about the 7 KW Ground Mount PV Array at the Aero Park Lab, and the 8 KW PV Solar Array at the Parsons-Stulen Building at 2600 Aero Park Drive. These arrays demonstrate two popular inverter technologies and a variety of mounting systems.

11 a.m.: Habitat for Humanity Solar Homes at the Depot Project

  • Address: 600 Railroad Place, Traverse City, MI

Noon: The VanValin Residence - Energy Efficiency meets Clean Energy here!

  • Address: 871 Webster Street, Traverse City, MI

1 p.m.: Solar Tour participants can choose North, South, or West SITES

North - Enjoy the Solar and the Chateau Chantal Harvest Festival - 150 KW System at Chateau Chantal on the Old Mission Peninsula.

  • Address: 15900 Rue de Vin, Traverse City, MI

South - Learn about the Cherryland Rural Electric Cooperative's Community Solar Project

  • Address: 5930 US 31 South, Grawn, MI
