Elementary Education certification enables the teacher to instruct all subjects in grades K-5, and only their major and minor in grades 6, 7, and 8.

Admission Criteria

  1. Minimum overall GPA of 3.0. GPA does not guarantee admission into the program. All courses must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 to transfer to CMU.
  2. Transfer students must complete graduation competencies for CMU (ENG 111, 112; COM 111; MTH 111) at NMC or they will be required to complete these classes during their first or second semester at CMU.
  3. ENG 111, 112, and EDU 101 must be completed with a 3.0.
  4. Completion of the SAT exam is required for admission. Please contact the CMU office in Traverse City for details (231-995-1756).
  5. It is essential you make contact with CMU for admission requirements and dates of application in your freshman year at NMC. 

Basic Requirements

Completion of Basic Requirement courses at NMC will fulfill the general requirements at CMU. Upon request at the NMC Records and Registration Office, a statement will be placed on your transcript, "MICHIGAN TRANSFER AGREEMENT (MTA) SATISFIED".

  1. A child development minor will enable graduates to teach pre-school. A minor must be taken in consultation with an Education advisor at CMU. If a student graduates and wishes to return for this endorsement, an additional 18 hours of specific course work is required.

professional readiness exam (PRE)

We recommend you register for and take the PRE your second semester at NMC. This will allow you time to take additional courses and repeat the test if necessary. Be sure to keep the results of your test. Testing information is available in the Advising Center.
