Program: Elementary Education (Allendale campus)

An Elementary Certificate permits the holder to teach all subjects in grades K-5. Only major and minors may be taught in grades 6- 8 and all subjects, grades K-8 in a self-contained classroom.  Academic majors for certification are offered in various fields of study including Language Arts, Integrated Science, Social Studies and Mathematics.  Programs are approved by the Michigan Department of Education and accredited by the National Council for Accreditation fo Teacher Education (NCATE).  The College of Education offers programs leading to bachelor's degree and Michigan Provisional elementary education with special education endorsements.


  1. Deadlines for application to Teacher Education are:
    1. September 15th for WInter admission and field placement
    2. February 1st for Fall admission and field placement
  2. Application packets are available in the College of Education.

The Professional Readiness Examination

We recommend you register for, and take the Professional Readiness Examination (previously called Michigan Basic Skills Test) your second semester at NMC. This will allow you time to take additional courses and repeat the test if necessary. In addition, some Education programs require the test results early in your second year at NMC for admission into their program. Be sure to keep the results of your test.
