NMC Transfer Guide - MTA

Program: Secondary Education

Students intending to qualify for Michigan Secondary provisional certification (valid to teach in Michigan grades 6–12 in a major and minor area) will complete a teaching major, usually a teaching minor, a sequence of professional courses, an Internship Studies program of 1 year, and pass the designated competency test.

Admission Criteria

  1. Apply – Students must first submit an application for undergraduate admission to the MSU Office of Admission indicating intention to earn a teaching certificate.
  2. Application for direct transfer – MSU will then provide access to the College of Education Direct Transfer online application to students who have met the following criteria:
    1. 30 transferable credits (will need at least 42 at time of transfer)
    2. Completion of all remedial courses (e.g., MTH 111)
    3. 3.1 or higher GPA
  3. Transfer Credits – MSY accepts a maximum of 60 community college credits.
  4. PRE – To be admitted to the College of Education at MSU, students must pass all 3 subtests of the MI Test for Teacher Certification Professional Readiness Exam.
  5. Application Deadline – Students should apply as early as possible (up to a year before intended transfer semester with at least 30 transferable credits).
  6. Scholarship Opportunities – Students with a GPA of 3.5 or above should meet with an NMC advisor to discuss transfer scholarship possibilities.

The following courses are listed to facilitate transfer and fulfill University requirements at MSU. These courses may not fulfill requirements for the Associate of Science an Arts degree at NMC. If your goal is to complete an associate's degree before transferring, see an advisor for assistance. 

Upon request at the NMC Records and Registration Office, a statement will be placed on your transcript, "MICHIGAN TRANSFER AGREEMENT (MTA) SATISFIED".
