Program: Social Work

Accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, the undergraduate professional program prepares students for beginning level social work practice, provides preparation for graduate training in social work, and offers general social welfare content.

ADMISSION CRITERIA

  1. Two-step application process: WMU General Admission and Admission to the School of Social Work
  2. Completion of 45 semester hours
  3. A 2.5 GPA is required to apply to the professional program.
  4. In addition to GPA, the admissions committee for the School of Social Work also considers volunteer experience (i.e. domestic assault shelters, nursing homes, schools, Family Independent Agencies, soup kitchens) and/or regular employment at such agencies, as part of the selection criteria.
  5. Completion of:
    1. SWK 121: Introduction to Social Work AND SWK 170: Service Learning Intern Orientation (NMC)
      OR
    2. SWRK 210: Social Work Services and Professional Roles (WMU) required before application may be made to the professional program. Transferring to WMU after 1 year is necessary to complete the program in 4 years. Admission is competitive.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS

Completion of the BASIC requirements as listed at NMC will fulfill most of the general requirements at WMU. WMU requires two additional General Education courses at the 300-400 level to be taken at WMU plus an upper level writing requirement (Proficiency #2 at WMU). Upon request at the NMC Records Office, a statement will be placed on your transcript,  "MACRAO AGREEMENT SATISFIED".
