Human Resources Updates

Extended Leave Benefits

Find a summary of changes to extended leave benefits here that are due to the coronavirus pandemic and relevant to NMC employees.

Priority Health COVID-19 Coverage

Employees enrolled in Priority Health, your health plan will now fully cover your treatment of COVID-19 in addition to screening and testing.

  • Your plan already covers screening, whether in-person or virtual, at $0 if your doctor orders a COVID-19 test.
  • If a doctor orders testing based upon your screening results, the test will also be administered at no cost to you.
  • In the unfortunate event that you or a loved one on your health plan is diagnosed with this illness, your treatment of COVID-19 will be fully covered at 100%. We will waive all copays, deductibles and coinsurance for inpatient and outpatient COVID-19 treatment from an in-network provider through June 30.

Additionally, for a limited time, get your prescriptions safely with free in-home delivery from Meijer, Walgreens and CVS.

  • Priority Health's online member FAQs have the latest on prescription delivery, coverage details and more.

For All Employees

HR contacted all employees Tuesday, April 14, with more detailed information about employee status for the remainder of the semester.

  • College employees are already categorized into essential and non-reporting/on call classifications.
  • Faculty are essential employees and will continue teaching their classes virtually, with no course/lab work permitted on campus.
  • Virtual instruction of classes will continue through the end of the semester, May 2.

NMC extends college campus closure through MAY 15

As our state continues efforts to mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has extended the Stay Home, Stay Safe order through May 15. To support this effort, and comply with the order, Northwestern Michigan College will extend the closure of all five of its campuses in Traverse City through May 15.

NMC’s five campuses include:

  • Main - 1701 E. Front St., Traverse City
  • Great Lakes - 715 E. Front St., Traverse City
  • Aero Park - 2600 Aero Park Dr., Traverse City
  • University Center - 2200 Dendrinos Dr., Traverse City
  • Rogers Observatory - 1753 Birmley Road, Traverse City

NMC will not return to face-to-face learning this semester and will continue online learning

On March 13, NMC canceled face-to-face classes through April 27, the week final exams were scheduled. Now, students will not return to campus for exams. Instructors will determine details for final exams and communicate directly with students as soon as possible.

Drop with Record and incompletes

A decision was made to extend the "Drop with Record" date for Spring, which was originally set at April 3, to May 2. It was communicated to students on Friday, March 20. This is the last date a student can drop and NOT have it calculate into their GPA. It will still show as a W on their transcript, as a record that they attended.

You will also be able to give "Incomplete" grades at the end of the semester if a student continued but needs more time to complete–they will have until the end of Fall under the usual policy.

Event Cancellations & Closures

  • NMC's Commencement will be postponed. All commencement-related activities, including Honors Convocation, will also be postponed. The May 2, 2020, commencement ceremony will either be delayed until August 2020, or a double ceremony will be held in May 2021. We will continue to communicate with you as the situation evolves.
  • For an ongoing list of closures and cancellations, find out more here.

Personal Counseling

We recognize that this is an anxious and potentially stressful time for our community and want to remind you that we have counseling available through our Employee Assistance Program. Cheryl Rogers at our partner agency, Catholic Human Services, can be contacted there at (231) 947-8387.

Mail Collection Procedures

In order to provide the opportunity to continue collecting mail during the campus closure, departments should call NMC Facilities at (231) 995-1111 to schedule an appointment for mail pickup. Employees should wear a face covering such as a mask or scarf when entering the Facilities building, and also answer the health and safety questions from the county in this document.

Starting Tuesday, April 28, when you make an appointment with Facilities to pick up mail, you may bring any outgoing mail with you. Place the mail in the large tote marked "outgoing" on the front desk, and it will be processed and delivered to the post office on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Travel Policies

NMC has suspended all international and domestic business travel for its employees. Follow these procedures.

West Hall Innovation Center Update

Following Governor Gretchen Whitmer's Stay Home, Stay Safe Executive Order, construction on the West Hall Innovation Center has been paused. Construction will resume once the order has been lifted.
