2016 Manufacturing Summit

Commitment to Workers' Health and Safety

By Betsy WilliamsBetsy Williams

The second annual Grand Traverse Area Manufacturing Summit held on March 1, was hosted by NMC Training Services, the Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center, and the Grand Traverse Area Manufacturing Council.  The Summit was sponsored by Huntington Bank and drew a crowd of over 80 attendees to the NMC Hagerty Center. The event focused on the importance, impact, and benefits to businesses as it relates to on-the-job safety. Breakout sessions on Manufacturing Day 2016 planning, action plans of the manufacturing council, and how to connect to funding sources were well attended.

Nicole Agruda, Lean Analyst with Kennametal, wore her orange safety vest as she passionately spoke on the importance of safety to her organization. Federal OSHA estimates for every dollar invested in workplace safety, employers see a $4-6 return. Nicole stated, I absolutely enjoyed being able to convey our ideas and best practices to this amazing group of manufacturers and, afterwards, having the opportunity to speak one-on-one with so many individuals. I hope we can all keep the conversation going to keep northern Michigan safe!” Nicole and Kennametal have graciously allowed us to share their presentation. Follow this link to the presentation.

Janie McNabb, Chief Operating Officer of Networks Northwest, and Lisa Rollin, Grant Coordinator at NMC Training Services, lead a breakout session on how to connect to funding sources. A take-away from this session was that manufacturers want more local opportunities to learn about funding opportunities. With that goal in mind, we have arranged for a presentation on the Defense Manufacturing Assistance Program to be held here in Traverse City on Wednesday, April 13, at 2 p.m.  For more information and to sign-up for this free event click here….

The Grand Traverse Area Manufacturing Council was created for and is driven by local manufacturers.  A big “thank you” to the Council board members who assisted with the Summit. The executive committee consists of Chair Corey Geer from Shoreline Fruit, Vice-Chair Jon Dreher from TentCraft, Common Issues Chair Steve Perdue from Grand Traverse Industries, along with many community manufacturing business members. The Council promotes local manufacturing with long-term thinking, education, and collaboration through people and companies that allow us to make great things.

Manufacturers come get involved!  The next GTA Manufacturing Council meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 18, from 7:30-9:00 a.m.  The council meets every two months on the morning of the third Wednesday. For more information or to register, please contact Betsy Williams (ewilliams@nmc.edu or 231-995-2018).

The third annual Grand Traverse Area Manufacturing Summit is scheduled for Tuesday, March 7, 2017. Please mark your calendars.

A strong manufacturing community benefits the economy of northern Michigan.  Stay calm and make something!
