Rob SummersWelcome Rob!

By: Lynn Geiger And Matt Schwarze

The NMC Training Services crew grew by one this summer! Rob Summers joined the team as Senior Business Advisor - Manufacturing last month. He brings a broad range of experience in manufacturing and business, with more than a decade spent in the aerospace industry. Rob says he’s particularly excited to have the opportunity to work with local businesses and organizations to help create success. “I really like the challenge of getting out and helping folks do their stuff better,” Rob says. “At the end of the day, having a lot of successful companies makes for a healthy economy here in northern Michigan.”

Originally from southern Michigan, Rob headed to the Upper Peninsula for an engineering degree from Michigan Tech (go Huskies!), and later earned an MBA from the University of Massachusetts.

After his time at Tech, Rob and wife Emily (also a Husky!) left the UP for the desert, where he launched his career with Goodrich in Phoenix, Arizona. Starting as a manufacturing engineer, he eventually moved into management where he was responsible for aftermarket business development activities within Asia and Pacific Rim regions and supported a product portfolio of systems including aircraft specialty seating, cargo handling, evacuation and lighting.

With hearts rooted in Michigan, the couple and their young family returned to Michigan -- specifically Menominee -- in 2011 while continuing to work for Goodrich at its Peshtigo, Wisconsin, location right across the state border. There he was responsible for several value streams, including delivery and profit/loss performance, as well as business strategy for business jet customers.

A few years later, and with his parents living in Traverse City, Rob and Emily relocated to Williamsburg so their children could be close to their grandparents. After working locally for both Cone Drive and Britten Metalworks, Rob began as an independent contractor for NMC Training Services, specializing in lean for manufacturing and office environments in 2017.

A self-professed hockey junkie, Rob not only plays hockey but cheers on the Red Wings, Michigan Tech Huskies and the Grand Rapids Griffins. He also enjoys spending free time in the kitchen and counts burritos, jambalaya and corn and andouille soup among his specialties. The only non-lean part of Rob’s life can be found in the excessive inventory of homemade canned applesauce made from his great grandmother Schaeffer’s recipe. He justifies his inventory build-up because it takes a massive hit through the winter months. PS. See if you can sweet talk him into giving you a jar!
