Where Are You in Your Project Management Journey?

Karen GoikeBY Karen Goike, Senior Business Advisor

Project management provides significant value at both an organizational and individual level. According to the Project Management Institute’s (PMI) “Pulse of the Profession®”, organizations that engage in project management practices experience greater success. In today’s environment, traditional management of scope, time and cost is not enough to remain competitive. Expected benefits or key success factors, defined at project initiation, are equally or even more important. Strategic change can be achieved when project selection and delivery are aligned with organizational goals.

For individuals, a project management career path can provide an opportunity to be on the front lines of strategic initiatives that impact an organization’s future. Certification in project management indicates a personal commitment to high standards and is a sought after credential. Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center’s – Northern Lower Office offers an “Applied Project Management” course (currently underway). Successful completion of the course meets the education requirement for certification.

“This course has opened my eyes to the opportunities that a PMI certification can offer my organization. I have already started to integrate changes to how we operate and approach our daily work.” Nathan Griswold, Inhabitect, LLC

“I had not realized the scope involved in starting/working/ending projects. This class opened my eyes to the tools and techniques, and certifications available in this field – and that this is considered necessary in many industries.” Tony Ayoub, Petoskey Plastics

“I plan to not only sit for the exam but will also use what I’ve learned to better manage my current and future projects.” Amanda Rommell, Munson Healthcare

Certified project managers are in high demand. Certification can lead to increased earning potential and prepares individuals for leadership.
