Northern Michigan Manufacturing Summit: Join Us March 5

Rob SummersBy: Rob Summers, Senior Business Advisor manufacturing

It’s hard to believe, but March will be here before we know it! Along with March Madness, that also means it’s time once again for the Northern Michigan Manufacturing Summit hosted by the Grand Traverse Area Manufacturing Council. This year’s event will be held on Tuesday, March 5, 7:30 – 11:30 a.m., at the Hagerty Center in Traverse City. Now in its fourth year, the summit will offer a full morning themed around technology in manufacturing with a specific focus on Industry 4.0. Andrew Storm, president of Michigan-based Eckhart USA and proud Michigan Tech alum, is the keynote.

The term “Industry 4.0” describes the transformative confluence of several technologies, which are expected to create significant shifts in how we approach manufacturing. In the digital space, augmented reality, big data, cloud computing, system integration, and the Internet of Things (IoT) create significant impacts on business processes as well as on our equipment. Being more in touch with our data, and generating a deeper technical understanding of equipment performance will prove to be a differentiator in highly competitive and highly technical manufacturing applications. Technologies such as cobots (robots which are designed to work side by side with humans) will change how labor is deployed and how we perceive human/machine interactions. Additive manufacturing is a disruptive approach to creating products which has made significant strides and will become a threat to component machine shops in many industries.

Eckhart USA consults and executes Industry 4.0 projects with manufacturers on a global scale. Storm’s insights will prove useful for area businesses interested in learning more about these emerging technologies, their applications, and their impacts. Additional breakout sessions during the summit are planned to explore selected topics in further detail. At NMC Training Services, we are excited about the development underway for our own Industry 4.0 lab, which we will use to demonstrate some of these technologies. We also plan to make training content available for those who would like more formal introductory-level learning. We hope you will join us at this year’s summit and look forward to discussing your company’s future as it relates to Industry 4.0!

The event is free. RSVP here!

Special thanks to platinum sponsors Chemical Bank, Skilled Manufacturing, Inc., and the Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center for their support of this event.
