A New Chapter

Rich WolinBY RICHARD WOLIN, regional vice president MMTC NORTHERN MICHIGAN REGION

Continuous improvement is about always seeking to get better, do something better, do it with less effort or fewer resources. It is with this in mind that I announce a continuous improvement for our team at NMC Training Services. Starting July 1, 2019, our team members will become employees of the Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center (MMTC). We will continue to serve you through our partnership with Northwestern Michigan College (NMC) as we have for the past 27 years to provide education, consultation and coaching to all types of organizations in northern Michigan. The result of this partnership has been documented, with tangible impacts for both organizations and individual learners in the areas of lean and continuous improvement, quality systems, leadership, team skills and many other specialized topics and customized projects.

Although you may not notice any significant change immediately, our strategy is to improve access to experts and content for clients in northern Michigan, both manufacturers and service organizations. As a formal part of the MMTC statewide team, we will be able to access additional statewide and national expert resources focused on manufacturing and processing industries. Likewise, our sustained partnership with NMC allows our experts to continue working with non-manufacturing clients to bring strategic planning, leadership, process improvement education and coaching at the professional level. In addition, this new relationship affords us the opportunity to build similar relationships with other partner institutions within our 21-county service area.

On a more practical level, our clients will see minor changes in the form of new proposals and invoicing processes that will come from our MMTC office rather than NMC. However, you will continue to work with the same dedicated and customer-oriented staff you are familiar with. For clients using the Michigan New Jobs Training Program (MNJTP) through NMC, this will continue to be offered in collaboration with the MMTC in support of one of NMC’s purposes to “contribute to economic development.” In other areas of our 21-county region, we plan to continue and/or expand our relationship with Michigan colleges in support of MNJTP funding for their clients as well.

The northern office of the Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center will continue to be hosted at NMC’s Aero Park campus and will continue to work with non-manufacturers representing NMC in the areas of strategic planning, our leadership development program, lean certifications and lean management, project management and the many components of team skills, including DISC and Myers-Briggs.

I have been with Northwestern Michigan College for more than 30 years and have seen the wonderful impact this institution has had on our community, as well as personally on my five children. It is with both reflection and excitement that I and my team move on to this next stage in our journey. One constant for our team is the utmost importance we place on your success. In addition, we highly value the close relationships with our partnership, which have been built through shared purpose of improving the capabilities of local organizations and their workforce. Our continued focus on you gives us faith in the future as we move through this change. I look forward to seeing all of you in the near future.
