Certification at the secondary level enables the teacher to instruct their major and minor in grades 6-12. Majors in Art, Health Education, Home Economics, Industrial Education, Music, and Physical Education, and Special Education will qualify for recommendation for a Secondary Provisional certificate which will permit the holder to teach the major in grades K-12 and the minor in grades 6-12.

ADMISSION CRITERIA

  1. Minimum overall GPA of 2.7. GPA does not guarantee admission into the program. All courses must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 to transfer to CMU.
  2. Minimum of 45 semester credits – Students are encouraged to meet with a CMU advisor. More credits may be recommended.
  3. Transfer students must complete graduation competencies for CMU. (ENG 111, 112; COM 111; MTH 111) at NMC or they will be required to complete these classes during their first or second semester at CMU.
  4. ENG 111, 112, and EDU 101 must be completed with a 3.0 or better.
  5. Completion of the SAT is required for Admission. Contact CMU for details.
  6. It is essential you make contact with CMU for admission requirements and dates of application in your first year at NMC. We strongly recommend you visit CMU as early as possible in your academic career.
  7. Visit with your NMC advisor for assistance with the selection of courses within your major/minor which may be taken at NMC and could also be used above towards your general education requirements.

Basic Requirements

Upon request at the NMC Records and Registration Office, a statement will be placed on your transcript, "MICHIGAN TRANSFER AGREEMENT (MTA) SATISFIED". Completion of the MTA will satisfy CMU's University Program requirements and 6 credits of their Writing Intensive requirement.

CMU's Quantitative Reasoning (QR) requirement can be met at NMC with MTH 131, PHY 121 or 221. MTH 131 cannot count toward both the QR requirement and the math requirement for CMU.

 

  1. Consult the CMU catalog for a list of majors/minors available for Secondary teachers.
  2. Meet with an NMC Advisor for assistance with the selection of courses within your major/minor. These may also satisfy general education requirements.
