NMC Transfer Guide

Program: Special Education endorsement- Elementary Emphasis

Before starting this program, please call Central Michigan University because Central is discussing the discontinuation of an Elementary Education option in Special Education.

Special Education offers undergraduate majors in the Bachelor of Science in Education degree, Special Education emphasis. All students preparing to teach in Special Education must choose a major: Cognitive Impairment or Emotional Impairment. You must also choose Secondary or Elementary emphasis. As a special Education teacher, you are permitted to teach special education, cognitive or emotionally impaired in grades K-12. Elementary Emphasis enables you to teach grades K-8.

ADMISSION CRITERIA

  1. Minimum overall GPA of 2.7. GPA will be calculated on the most recent 45 credit hours. GPA does not guarantee admission into the program.
  2. 45 Hours of documented in-classroom experience with a State Certified Teacher.
  3. Minimum of 45 semester credits. Students are encouraged to meet with a CMU advisor. More credits may be recommended.
  4. Transfer students must complete graduation competencies for CMU (Eng 111, 112; Com 111; Mth 111) at NMC or they will be required to complete these classes during their first or second semester at CMU.
  5. ENG 111, 112, and EDU 101 must be completed with a 3.0 or better.
  6. Students must successfully complete the Michigan Basic Skills Test (MBST #96). Apply online at www.mttc.nesinc.com.
  7. Due to the specific nature of this program, it is essential you contact and work with a CMU representative as early as possible for important start dates and admission requirements. This is typically a five year program.

Completion of Basic Requirement courses at NMC will satisfy the MACRAO Agreement fulfill the general requirements at CMU.

  1. Consult the CMU catalog for a list of majors/minors available for Special Education teachers.
  2. Visit with your NMC Advisor/Counselor for assistance with selection of courses within your major/minor. These may also satisfy general education/MACRAO requirements.

MICHIGAN BASIC SKILLS TEST

We recommend you register for and take the Michigan Basic Skills Test your second semester at NMC. This will allow you time to take additional courses and repeat the test if necessary. Be sure to keep the results of your test. Testing information is available in the Advising Center.
