NMC Transfer Guide - MTA

Program: Elementary Education

Eastern Michigan University's program prepares teachers for elementary education (K-5) and middle level teaching (6-8). An elementary teaching certificate allows students to teach grades K-5 however if wishing to teach at the middle school level students must take the subject area test in the major or minor. There are three major components to the courses students must take:

  1. Students will complete the Liberal Arts Major in Elementary Education
  2. Students have the choice of completing either a second major or two minors
  3. Students will complete studies with a series of professional education courses concluding with student teaching.

Admission Requirements

  1. 2.5 cumulative GPA
  2. Completion of the Professional Readiness Examination.
  3. It is essential that you contact EMU as early as possible for assistance in meeting education requirements and for meeting application and orientation deadlines.
  4. Transfer students who are admitted to EMU with 56 transferable credit hours a minimum 3.0 GPA and have passed each section of the Professional Readiness Examination may apply for admission to the Initial Teacher Preparation Program before having completed 12 credits at EMU.

A student whose community college transcript is certified as "MTA satisfied" will be required to fulfill three requirements that are part of EMU’s general education program:

  • One approved course in Global Awareness or U.S. Diversity.
    • The following courses would fulfill this requirement in the Humanities area: ENG 245 ENG 263 ENG 271 HST 211. The following courses would fulfill this requirement in the Social Science area: ANT 113 GEO 109 PLS 132 PSY 212.
    • The following Humanities area classes would fulfill this requirement ONLY if taken prior to transferring to EMU: ENG 242 HST 212 HST 213 HUM 116. The following Social Science classes would fulfill this requirement ONLY if taken prior to transferring to EMU: PLS 211 SOC 220.
  • A Learning beyond the Classroom (LBC) course or experience completed at EMU.
  • One Writing Intensive course in the student's major.

Basic Requirements

Completion of the Basic requirements as listed at NMC will fulfill the general requirements at EMU. Upon request at the NMC Records and Registration Office a statement will be placed on your transcript "MICHIGAN TRANSFER AGREEMENT (MTA) SATISFIED".
