NMC Transfer Guide

Program: Secondary Education

EMU offers certification for Secondary Education with a wide variety of majors and minors. The student will be permitted to teach their major or minor in grades 6 - 12. Some courses in your major or minor may be taken at NMC and may be used towards the MACRAO agreement.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  1. 2.5 GPA.
  2. Completion of the Michigan Basic Skills Test.
  3. It is essential that you contact EMU as early as possible for assistance in meeting education requirements and for meeting application and orientation deadlines. Prospective business, management, marketing & technology majors, music education majors (vocal or instrumental) or physical education majors are welcome to contact the appropriate faculty advisor. All others should attend an open advising session.
  4. Transfer students who have passes each section of the Basic Skills Test, have 56 transferrable credits and a minimum 3.0 GPA may apply directly to the College of Education without having completed 12 credits at EMU.

A student whose community college transcript is certified as "MACRAO satisfied" will be required to fulfill three additional requirements that are part of EMU’s general education program:

  • One approved quantitative reasoning course (unless waived by an ACT math sub-score of 28 or higher or (SAT math sub-score of 670). Courses at NMC that would fulfill this requirement include MTH 206, MTH 121, MTH 131, or MTH 141.
  • One approved course in Global Awareness or U.S. Diversity. The following courses would fulfill this requirement in the Humanities area: ART 214, ENG 242, ENG 263, HST 212, HST 213, HUM 116, or PHL 122. The following courses would fulfill this requirement in the Social Science area: ANT 113, GEO 109, PLS 132, PLS 211.
  • A Learning beyond the Classroom (LBC) course or experience completed at EMU.
