For students interested in advertising and public relations, careers are available with manufacturers, the mass media, advertising agencies, government and non-profit agencies.

ADMISSION CRITERIA

  1. Admission Applications - MSU prefers students to submit applications online at www.admissions.msu.edu/apply.asp
  2. Admission GPA - Minimum of 2.7 - 3.0 required for consideration; enrollments in the Dept. of Advertising are limited; higher grades may be necessary. Students should allow 10-12 weeks for an admission decision from the time all required materials are received by MSU.
  3. Transfer credits - 60-64 credits is the maximum amount of credits students should take at NMC. MSU requires that one half of degree requirements be completed at a 4 year school. Students who accumulate more than 60-64 credits at NMC are still held accountable for completing one half of their degree at a 4 year school.
  4. Junior Status - Students are admitted into Advertising as Juniors (56 credits).
  5. Transfer Grades - Courses with grades below 2.0 will not transfer to MSU.
  6. Work Experience - Very helpful; summer work in advertising and related fields is often available with media, manufacturers and advertising agencies.
  7. Transfer Scholarships - Students with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above should talk to their NMC counselor about possible MSU transfer scholarship opportunities.
  8. Dual Enrolled Course Policies – College courses counted toward “core” high school requirements may not transfer to MSU.  Questions concerning transfer of dual enrolled classes can be clarified by contacting MSU's transfer credit evaluators.
  9. Transfer Visitation Program - Admission presentations and campus tours for prospective transfer students are offered most Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. from Labor Day through Memorial Day. Summer presentations are offered on Thursdays at 1:30 with no tour. Visit MSU online to make a reservation.

The following courses are listed to facilitate transfer and fulfill University requirements at MSU. If your goal is to complete an Associate degree before transferring, a NMC counselor can help you achieve both goals.

Special Note:
NMC highly recommends that one of your Humanities choices be either HST 111 or HST 112 U.S. History. Although it is not absolutely required, taking U.S. History eliminates having to take an integrated writing and humanities course at MSU. Without a U.S. History course, transfer students can expect to take IAH 201 at MSU.

Science/Math

Social Science

Four semester credits equivalent to any 200 – level ISS course at MSU.  An additional 300-level social science course must be completed at MSU.

Math

Students who complete MTH 121 College Algebra at NMC will receive enchanced admissions consideration. Students who delay starting math at NMC risk admission consideration at MSU.

This can be met in one of the following ways:

  1. Testing above the College Algebra level on a competency test taken at MSU.
  2. Completing MTH 121 College Algebra at NMC.
  3. Completing MTH 140 College Algebra & Trigonometry at NMC.

MAJOR REQUIREMENTS FOR ADVERTISING

Courses taken for the major may NOT be counted toward the BASIC REQUIREMENTS listed above.
