Science & Math is represented by seven
departments in the areas of mathematics, physical
and natural sciences. Science & Math is made up
of 18 full-time instructors, a full-time Academic Office
Manager, a full-time Science
Lab Manager, usually 15-25 adjunct instructors, one
student office worker and various student computer and
science lab assistants in any given semester. Current
leadership is as follows: Academic Area Chair - Tony
Jenkins, Mathematics Instructor, Science Department
Head - Greg LaCross,
Biology Instructor, and Mathematics Department Head -
Deb Pharo, Mathematics
Instructor. Our main office is located on the second floor
of the Les Beiderman Building which can be found between
the Tanis Administration and Health and Science buildings
on NMC's Main Campus. Adjacent to the Health and Science
Building is NMC's Greenhouse
which is used primarily by our Biology Department.
Students may select courses from Science and Mathematics
to fulfill requirements in a variety of programs or they
may wish to concentrate in one of these academic areas.
Students specializing in these areas are generally working
toward at least a bachelor’s degree and are planning to
transfer to a four-year college or university to complete
that degree. While at NMC, students pursue general liberal
arts curricula, with courses chosen from their area of
interest.
During their first semester at NMC, students should consult
the Counseling
Center staff and faculty members in their field of
interest to familiarize themselves with the transfer requirements
of the school(s) where they may complete their bachelor’s
degree. Students may elect to stay in Traverse City and
transfer to the University
Center.
