NMC Policies Revised 8/15/07

Parking at Northwestern Michigan College

Main Campus Map

The growth of the college in enrollment and the resulting concentration of vehicular and pedestrian traffic require an enactment of procedures and regulations for the protection of persons and property. The intent of the parking procedures is to establish traffic, parking, and pedestrian rules for the protection of students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

The parking policy, www.nmc.edu/policies/nmc/D-506-07.pdf, has been enacted by the administration of Northwestern Michigan College in accordance with the authority and responsibility vested upon them by the Board of Trustees of Northwestern Michigan College.

Permits

All students, faculty, and staff of Northwestern Michigan College are required to have and display a valid parking permit if they park in the college lots on main campus during the fall and spring semesters. All academic students are eligible to receive one parking decal at no cost. Additional and replacement decals are available at a cost of $10.00 per decal. Northwestern Michigan College faculty and staff may purchase an annual permit for $10.00. There is no refund on purchased decals.

Permits for faculty and staff will be available at the Records/Registration/Cashier's Office. Student permits will be available at the Records/Registration/Cashier's Office and the Welcome Center. Apartment resident decals are available in the Housing Office. Temporary permits for guests and emergencies are also available in the Cashier's Office and the Welcome Center. There is no charge for temporary decals. Special Needs parking permits are available from the Cashier's Office on a limited basis. A request for special needs parking must be submitted to the Cashier's Office in writing. You must provide a note/letter, that includes an expiration date, from your physician.

Decals must be placed on the vehicle in the driver's side front window.

The following documentation is required to receive a student-parking permit:

  • A current semester NMC class schedule
  • A valid driver's license
  • A valid motor-vehicle registration certificate

Vehicles must be parked in designated areas only.  Over-night parking is allowed in Dogwood and Elm Lots (Residence Halls) and Pine Lot (Apartments) with appropriate permits.  Traverse City Central High School dual-enrolled students shall park in the Elm lot during attendance at Central High School.

The following lots are restricted as indicated (campus map w/parking lots; opens in new browser window):

  • Pine Lot — Reserved for Apartment residents
  • Aspen Lot — Gated area reserved for Museum guests
  • Oak Lot — Reserved for Oleson Center guests
  • Dogwood/Elm Lot — Overnight parking allowed

All motor vehicles parked on Northwestern Michigan College properties must be currently registered by the state of origin and in operable condition.  Boats, snowmobiles, trailers, campers, etc. cannot be stored or parked in parking areas.

Enforcement

Enforcement of parking rules and regulations is by the City of Traverse City and Northwestern Michigan College Campus Safety.  Fines are payable to the "City of Traverse City."  There is a City fine receptacle (red box) placed near the Welcome Center sign.

Permit enforcement is from Monday through Friday during fall and spring semesters.  Enforcement of no parking zones, fire lanes, and handicap parking will be continuous.

Persons who obtain three or more unpaid parking violation notices in an academic semester may be subject to additional institutional penalties, including booting or towing of vehicle.  The registered owners of such vehicles shall be responsible for related costs.  Multiple unpaid parking offenses may result in suspension of parking permit and the privilege of using Northwestern Michigan College parking facilities.

Metered Zones

Metered visitor parking spaces are for visitors only.  Vehicles with College parking permits will be ticketed (or towed).  Vehicles shall not be in a metered zone for a period of time longer than designated on said parking meter and only upon the deposit of a coin of the denomination designated on the meter.  Vehicles with state issued handicap permits are exempt from these restrictions.
