Admission Requirements/considerations:

  • Applicants must be a United States citizen
  • Applicants with prior or pending misdemeanors, felonies or legal expungements will be prompted to submit additional information. Backgrounds must be adjudicated by the Maritime Admissions Office.
  • Academic placement is determined by transferable college credits, ACT/SAT scores (if less than 5 y ears old) and/or placement testing
  • Applicants must meet the United States Coast Guard physical standards and all requirements for licensing as a United States Merchant Marine Officer, as established by federal law. NOTE: This is not a active duty military physical.

A completed Application includes:

  1. Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended
  2. Official High School or GED transcripts
  3. Merchant Mariner Credential Medical Evaluation Report (PDF)
  4. Two letters of recommendation with contact information
  5. If Veteran, Undeleted DD214, Armed Services Discharge Report
  6. Admitted students must complete a visit. Applicants will be able to register for a visit with their Admission Representative once their application is complete. It is up to the applicant whether to complete the visit before or after and admission decision is received.

Important Dates

  • Maritime classes for incoming first-year cadets begin Fall semester only.
  • Early submission and completion of application materials is advised. Dates and deadlines are identified on the application page.
  • The FAFSA should be completed as soon as possible using school code 002302 and are available after Oct. 1 of the year prior to start of classes.
  • In Michigan, FAFSA should be submitted by March 1 to be eligible for maximum aid.
