Admission requirements

  • You must be a United States citizen
  • Be at least 17 years of age with a high school diploma or GED
  • No misdemeanors, felonies or legal expungements
  • United States Coast Guard physical and all requirements for licensing as a United States Merchant Marine Officer, as established by federal law
  • ACT or SAT minimum score requirements (below) or placement testing results or transferable Intermediate Algebra and English Composition college credits

Please note these are the minimal score sets required to be considered for admission into the Academy. Acceptance is competitive.

A completed application includes:

  1. Official copies of high school (and college transcripts, if applicable) from all schools attended
  2. ACT, SAT or other placement test scores or transferable credit
  3. Merchant Mariner Credential Medical Evaluation Report (PDF) »
  4. Two letters of recommendation with contact information

Important dates

  • Maritime classes for incoming first-year cadets begin Fall semester only. Formal reviews for acceptance will be made by the Director of Admissions on a rolling basis until the class is full.
  • The Academy admits approximately 60 cadets each year; early completion of application materials is advised. Applications are open/available 13 months prior to the start of the next Fall class.
  • FAFSA forms should be complete as soon as possible after Jan. 1 to be eligible for maximum aid.
