Student Residency - Classification
- Residency Classification Criteria
In-District: A person who owns property in Grand Traverse County or has lived in Grand Traverse County for a minimum of six months as a non-student immediately prior to enrollment at NMC. For residency purposes, a non-resident student is someone not attending NMC or taking five or fewer credits.
In-State: A person who owns property in Michigan or has lived in Michigan outside Grand Traverse County a minimum of six months immediately prior to enrollment at NMC.
Out-of-State: A person who is a resident of a state other than Michigan.
International: A person who is a resident of a country other than the United States.
- Change of Residency Classification
A student may petition for a change of Residency Classification when the student has been a resident for six months and has taken five or fewer credits in any single semester during that time.
The Dean for Enrollment Management and Student Services, in conjunction with the appropriate faculty and staff, is responsible for the development and publication of any procedures or guidelines that may be necessary to administer this policy effectively.
If any provisions(s) of this policy or set of bylaws conflicts with laws applicable to Northwestern Michigan College, including the Community College Act of 1966, the Freedom of Information Act, or the Open Meetings Act, as each may be amended from time to time, such laws shall control and supersede such provisions(s).
