NMC Transfer Guide

Program: Elementary Education

Elementary Education certification enables the teacher to instruct all subjects in grades K-5, and only their major and minor in grades 6, 7, and 8. Art, Music, Physical Education, Health Education, Home Economics, Foreign Language, and Special Education majors may teach these majors in K-12, their minor in grades 6, 7, and 8.

ADMISSION CRITERIA

  1. Minimum overall GPA of 2.7. GPA will be calculated on the most recent 45 credit hours. GPA does not guarantee admission into the program. All courses must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 to transfer to CMU.
  2. 45 hours of documented in-classroom experience with a State Certified Teacher.
  3. Minimum of 45 semester credits - Students are encouraged to meet with a CMU advisor. More credits may be recommended.
  4. Transfer students must complete graduation competencies for CMU (ENG 111, 112; COM 111; MTH 111) at NMC or they will be required to complete these classes during their first or second semester at CMU.
  5. ENG 111, 112, and EDU 101 must be completed with a 3.0.
  6. Students must successfully complete the Michigan Basic Skills Test (MBST #96). Apply online at www.mttc.nesinc.com.
  7. It is essential you make contact with CMU for admission requirements and dates of application in your freshman year at NMC. We strongly recommend you visit CMU as early as possible in your academic career.

Completion of Basic Requirement courses at NMC will satisfy the MACRAO Agreement and fulfill the general requirements at CMU.

  1. Consult the CMU catalog for a list of majors/minors available for Elementary teachers.
  2. Visit with your NMC Advisor for assistance with the selection of courses within your major/minor. These may also satisfy general education requirements.
  3. A child development minor will enable graduates to teach pre-school. A minor must be taken in consultation with an Education advisor at CMU. If a student graduates and wishes to return for this endorsement, an additional 18 hours of specific course work is required.

MICHIGAN BASIC SKILLS TEST

We recommend you register for and take the Michigan Basic Skills Test your second semester at NMC. This will allow you time to take additional courses and repeat the test if necessary. Be sure to keep the results of your test. Testing information is available in the Advising Center.
