Math Placement Guide

Effective For Spring 2025 Enrollment

  • Test scores and high school GPA are valid for placement for 5 years. After 5 years, the student must retest.
  • Students with HS GPA only must also have at least one testing measure to be placed
  • The measure (Accuplacer, SAT, ACT or HS GPA) achieving the highest placement for the student will be used.
  • Any student may choose to take Accuplacer to improve their placement . Accuplacer can be taken twice with no questions asked. After this, a student must attend a College Math Prep workshop or get special permission to retake.
  • Competency
  • Completion of a course that fulfills the math competency requirement, at NMC or transferred from another institution, does not expire unless a specified by a program
  • A test score that satisfies the math competency for the student’s degree does not expire as long as the student is continuously enrolled in the same degree program
  • Any requests for overrides should be made to the math department chair only.
